DeerScan
We are encouraging the community to report feral deer using the DeerScan website and App. A new website has been launched for people to report feral deer in their local area. DeerScan is a new community resource for mapping and reporting sightings of feral deer and the damage they are causing. DeerScan has been developed in response to rising concerns from farmers, landholder
groups and the community about feral deer impacts. Information entered into DeerScan will be used to help manage deer populations and reduce the damage they are causing.
There are six deer species in Australia (including fallow, sambar, red, chital, rusa and hog deer). Recent surveys show that their numbers are increasing, and problems associated with deer are also rising. The deer species of primary interest to the Cardinia Deer Management Coalition are fallow and sambar.
DeerScan is part of the broader FeralScan community resource for mapping and monitoring invasive pests. Anyone can use the DeerScan website and the free FeralScan App. If you wish to share your sightings with our group, let us know and we will send you an invitation. We strongly advocate this, as information you record will be available to the Cardinia Deer Management Coalition, enabling us to target control methods more efficiently. Sightings and other information you record will be managed discretely. To report feral deer, simply visit www.deerscan.org.au or download the FeralScan App (free download from Apple and Android).
